Coal mining began at the end of the 19th century, leading to permanent settlements. The Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol are the only mining companies. No roads connect settlements; transport relies on snowmobiles, aircraft, and boats. The island has an Arctic climate with higher temperatures than other places at the same latitude.
